About 5 km northwest of the Registan, Samarkand's station sends Afrosiyob high-speed trains to Tashkent, Bukhara and Karshi, and overnight trains to Termez, Khiva and beyond.

3 Abu Rayhan Beruni Street, Samarkand

A station with history

The railway reached Samarkand in 1888, and for ten years the city was the end of the line of the Transcaspian Railway, until the tracks were pushed on to Tashkent and Andijan in 1898. The station building took its present form in the 1980s and was restored in the 2000s and 2010s. Afrosiyob high-speed trains have called here since 2011; high-speed services reached Karshi in 2015, Bukhara in 2016 and, in May 2026, Urgench and Khiva.

Where the trains go

The Afrosiyob reaches Tashkent in roughly 2¼–2½ hours, Bukhara in about 1½–1¾ hours and Karshi in around 1 hour 10 minutes. The new Jaloliddin Manguberdi high-speed train between Tashkent and Khiva stops here too. The Sharq (Tashkent–Bukhara) and Nasaf (Tashkent–Karshi) take about 3–4 hours to the capital, while overnight passenger trains run to Termez, Khiva, Urgench, Kungrad and Andijan, and international services to cities such as Volgograd.

Tickets and services

Tickets are sold against your passport on eticket.railway.uz (which now redirects to eticket.uzrailpass.uz), in the app and at the station ticket offices. Bags and documents are checked at the entrance. A paid VIP lounge (100,000 som per person) offers Wi-Fi, drinks, separate check-in and its own access to the platform. Information desk: +998 95 560 01 42; Uzbekistan Railways call centre: 1005.

Getting to the centre

Both tram routes start at the station: route 2 runs to the Siab Bazaar, about a kilometre from the Registan, and route 1 to Sartepo. A ride costs 2,000 som by card or 3,000 in cash. A taxi to the centre takes 10–15 minutes. Buses M1 and 256 link the station with the airport (6:00–21:00, roughly every 15 minutes).

Good to know

  • Afrosiyob seats go fast in spring and autumn — book as soon as sales open.
  • Keep your passport handy: you need it to buy a ticket and to enter the station.
  • Trains to Termez, Khiva and Kungrad often leave in the small hours, when trams and buses have stopped — order a ride-hailing taxi.
