Friday mosque in the Makhdumi Azam complex at Dahbed. Official sources say Yalangtush Bahadur commissioned it in 1619; it was restored in 1991 and 1998.
Bozorjoy mahalla, Dahbed, Oqdaryo District
According to the Samarkand branch of the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan, the mosque was commissioned in 1619 by Yalangtush Bahadur, patron of the Sher-Dor and Tilya-Kori madrasas on the Registan, and in its day was one of the oasis's cultural centres. It bears the name of Makhdumi Azam (Sayyid Ahmad Khoja Kasani), the Naqshbandi sheikh who died in Dahbed in 1542.
The sheikh came from the Fergana Valley to the Miyankal oasis at the invitation of the Shaybanid ruler Janibek Sultan. Legend has it that he planted ten willows here, which gave Dahbed ('ten willows') its name.
A plane tree more than 500 years old shades the courtyard. The shrine was restored and reopened in 1991, fully renovated in 1998 and landscaped in 2014. The national heritage register lists the Makhdumi Azam complex (mosque, khanqah, gatehouse and dakhma) as a monument of the 17th–19th centuries.
