Khoja Zudmurod Mosque
A Friday mosque by the Khoja Zudmurod cemetery in the old city. The building dates from the 19th century; an inscription credits its north iwan (1896) to one Khushkomilboy.
81 Chorraha St, Samarkand
Architecture
The mosque consists of a prayer hall framed by iwans on three sides, plus a minaret. Two doors on each side — six in all — lead from the iwans into the hall with its four wooden columns, and the mihrab sits in the middle of the west wall. The iwan columns stand in a single row on the east and south but a double row on the north, and their differing decoration shows the parts were built at different times.
An inscription in the north iwan records that it was built in 1896 with money from one Khushkomilboy, and names the carpenters Mukhtor and Abdurauf, the painters Mahmud, Naim and Sharif and the plasterers Sadullo and Kamol. The Khoja Zudmurod complex is on the national register of 19th–20th-century monuments.
Legends
Locals read the name as 'the place where wishes come true quickly', and prayers said here are believed to be answered swiftly. Legend has it that Timur brought the remains of Hazrat Jirjis (St George) here and buried them beside the mosque.
