Faqih Abu Lays Mosque

A Friday mosque on Vobkent Street in the old city, named after the 10th-century Hanafi jurist Abu al-Layth al-Samarqandi; its mosque-and-tomb complex is 15th–19th-century.

The name

The mosque honours Abu al-Layth Nasr ibn Muhammad al-Samarqandi, known as 'the Faqih' (jurist) and 'Imam al-Huda'. A leading 10th-century Hanafi jurist and Qur'an commentator, he wrote Tanbih al-Ghafilin and a commentary also known as Bahr al-Ulum.

The Faqih Abu Lays complex, comprising the mosque and a mausoleum, is on the national register as a 15th–19th-century architectural monument. Official lists spell the mosque's name both Faqih Abu Lays and Fakex Abulays.

Visiting a mosque: cover shoulders and knees (women should wear a headscarf) and take your shoes off at the door; avoid prayer times and ask before taking photos.
