History

The mosque is named after Imam Azam, Abu Hanifa, founder of the Hanafi school of law. Its first building went up in the 1880s–90s and was put to other uses in Soviet times. The dilapidated structure was rebuilt in 1990–91, and by 2013 a second prayer hall, an iwan and a domed gatehouse had been added.

A full renovation funded by volunteers and sponsors began in 2013, blending national and modern architecture, and the mosque was handed back to worshippers on 24 December 2016. The Imam Azam Mosque is also on the national register of 19th–20th-century monuments, and in 2023 the Mufti of Uzbekistan preached here before Friday prayers.
