Murod Avliyo Mosque
A mosque in the Murod Avliyo complex, which grew up around the tomb of Khoja Said Muso (Murod Avliyo, d. 1511); the shrine is revered by Shia and Sunni Muslims alike.
Murod Avliyo St, Nafosat mahalla, Samarkand
History
At the heart of the complex is the tomb of the jurist Khoja Said Muso ibn Said Murtazo, better known as Murod Avliyo, a disciple of Khoja Ahrar Vali who died in 1511. Murod means 'wish' or 'good intention', and pilgrims come to ask for their wishes to be granted, especially on Wednesdays.
The mausoleum was built in the 19th century by Samarkand's Iranian community and closed in Soviet times. After independence it reopened, was fully restored and placed in the care of the local Iranian community. A small mosque of the same name in a corner of the courtyard is still used by local people. Murod Avliyo (19th–20th centuries) is on the national heritage register.
Official list: Listed by the Samarkand branch of the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan (sammuslim.uz).
Visiting a mosque: cover shoulders and knees (women should wear a headscarf) and take your shoes off at the door; avoid prayer times and ask before taking photos.
