History

Uzbekistan’s national register of cultural heritage lists a 19th–20th-century Yastepa Mosque in the mahalla of the same name. The old building, put up many years earlier, eventually became unusable, and the prayer hall could no longer hold the growing congregation.

In the second quarter of 2018, at the request of worshippers and local activists, the district’s chief imam proposed rebuilding the mosque. The new building opened on 11 May 2021, on the eve of Eid al-Fitr.

Official list: Listed by the Samarkand branch of the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan (sammuslim.uz).

Visiting a mosque: cover shoulders and knees (women should wear a headscarf) and take your shoes off at the door; avoid prayer times and ask before taking photos.
