A Friday mosque inside the Chor-Chinor shrine complex on the edge of Urgut, built in 1914 for Sheikh Muhiddinkhan and used as a madrasa until 1927.
22 Imam Bukhari St, Chorchinor mahalla, Urgut
The mosque stands within Chor-Chinor, Urgut’s ancient grove of plane trees and a revered shrine. It was built in 1914 for Sheikh Muhiddinkhan (1875–1931), an Urgut-born scholar who taught at the madrasas of Bukhara, by the master builder Abdukadyr (1868–1934). Until 1927 it also served as a madrasa for students from Urgut and the surrounding villages.
The sheikh’s father, the ishan Valikhan Ismailkhoja-ogly (1842–1915), who taught at Bukhara’s Mir-i-Arab Madrasa, is buried in the courtyard, and his son, Sheikh Qutbiddinkhan (1906–1983), became a noted orientalist. The mosque is on Uzbekistan’s national heritage register as a 19th–20th-century architectural monument.
