Friday mosque in Jom village, Nurobod District, built in 2018–2021 beside the Samarkand–Karshi highway; it holds nearly a thousand worshippers under a 32-metre dome.

History

The earlier Jom Ota mosque had ended up inside the cemetery on the edge of Jom village. Under the Obod Qishloq programme it was decided to move it beside the Karshi–Samarkand highway, and the foundation of the new building was laid on 24 March 2018. The old mosque and cemetery of Jom are on the national heritage register as a 17th–19th-century monument.

The new mosque opened on 31 March 2021. It occupies 0.25 ha and holds nearly a thousand worshippers, with a central dome rising 32 metres; the grounds also include a modern ablution block and an administrative building.

Visiting a mosque: cover shoulders and knees (women should wear a headscarf) and take your shoes off at the door; avoid prayer times and ask before taking photos.
