Iftikhor St, Ulugbek mahalla, Bulungur (town), Bulungur District

History

The mosque was founded in 1989 and is named after Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the Prophet Muhammad’s uncle and a renowned Companion. Its original hall held 500 worshippers, but standing right on the Tashkent–Samarkand highway it drew a steady stream of travellers, foreign tourists among them, and soon grew too small.

On 20 June 2020 the first stake was driven for a new building in the mosque courtyard. It was funded by a family of local benefactors with help from residents: the builders came from Andijan, the dome was made by craftsmen from Namangan and the doors by Samarkand artisans. The two-storey hall holds 2,200 worshippers and hosted its first Friday prayer on 8 October 2021.

According to the regional office of the Muslim Board, Bulungur District had only two mosques in the early 1990s; by 2021 there were 16.

Official list: Listed by the Samarkand branch of the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan (sammuslim.uz).
