Kok-Ata Mosque
Friday mosque with a minaret and a pool at the Kok-Ata shrine in Narpay District; the 17th–19th-century ensemble is on the national heritage register.
Kok-Ata mahalla, Narpay District
History
The shrine is linked to Said Ahmad al-Nasafi, revered locally as Kok-Ata or Avliyo-Ata. According to the Narpay district administration, he was born in Koson around 1419–1420, moved in 1455 to what is now Kok-Ata village — the old locality of Totkent — and died in 1491.
The administration’s website says the mosque, the saint’s mausoleum and the underground khanaqahs in the cemetery were built in the same period. Uzbekistan’s national heritage register, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers in 2019, lists the “Kok-Ata ensemble (mosque, mausoleum, pool)” as a 17th–19th-century architectural monument.
The ensemble
The mosque has a tall minaret for the call to prayer and, in front, a pool shaded by plane trees, all set among gardens. Behind it lies an 18-hectare cemetery of khojas with the saint’s double-domed mausoleum. Neglected in Soviet times, the shrine was restored after independence.
Official list: Listed by the Samarkand branch of the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan (sammuslim.uz).
Visiting a mosque: cover shoulders and knees (women should wear a headscarf) and take your shoes off at the door; avoid prayer times and ask before taking photos.
